TELECOM Fiji chief operating officer Taito Tabaleka is the company's acting chief executive.

A Telecom spokesperson said the board unanimously appointed Mr Tabaleka to the position following the resignation of managing director Joe Mar.
Mr Tabaleka's appointment is effective from May 1.

Telecom chairman Felix Anthony said Mr Tabaleka brought with him a wealth of experience after working in the telecommunication industry for more than 23 years.

TELECOM Fiji managing director Joe Mar Resigns

TELECOM Fiji managing director Joe Mar has resigned from his position, citing personal reasons.

Mr Mar said he had wanted to resign some time ago.
"Two years ago I was going to do that, try and spend time with my family," he said.

"The board of ATH (Amalgamated Telecom Holdings) and TFL asked me to conduct the changes that were needed here. "I'm extremely sad that I will leave this organisation but it's the choice I've made."I want to go and spend more time with my family. They've suffered."

Telecom Intrigue in BA, Fiji

What should have been a simple and straightforward process of either refusing or awarding mobile telephony licences to interested operators instead turned out to be an intricate web of backhanded politics, clandestine lobbying and propaganda against Ba Holdings Ltd and its mobile operator partner, Digicel (Fiji) Ltd, the local subsidiary of Jamaica-based Digicel.

This running game of furtive manoeuvres has its roots in the now lucrative mobile telephony market within which reigns Vodafone Fiji Ltd, the joint venture between Telecom Fiji Ltd (TFL) and the European-based Vodafone International Holding BV.

For a small island nation, Fiji has a reliable and efficient telecom system with access to the Southern Cross cable that links New Zealand, Australia and North America. The country's fast growing telecom industry is made up primarily of three major monopolies that are all currently protected through exclusivity licences. Telecom Fiji Ltd has the exclusive licence to provide domestic voice and data services; Vodafone Fiji Ltd is the sole provider of mobile services; and Fiji International Telecommunications Ltd (Fintel) has the monopoly on the supply of international voice and data services. In October 2005 Unwired Fiji launched the country's first privately owned broadband wireless network. In June 2006 in a protracted court battle, Vodafone Fiji, filed an injunction in an attempt to stop the government from awarding a licence to a new mobile operator.

VODAFONE SEEKS SETTLEMENT WITH FIJI GOVERNMENT

SUVA, Fiji (Fijilive, March 15) - The interim government is currently looking at a request by Vodafone Fiji for an out of court settlement over its exclusive license to operate a mobile telecommunications business in Fiji.
Interim Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum did not say when Government will reply to Vodafone Fiji managing director Aslam Khan's letter on February 21, 2007.

The parties have until April 30, since the matter is set for mention in the High Court before Justice Jiten Singh.

Vodafone had challenged the State's issuance of provisional licenses to Digicel and Pacific Connex to operate in Fiji's lucrative mobile phone industry.
It is now pursuing a more convenient out of court of settlement due to the prolonged legal battle and costs.

Vodaphone Fiji

Vodafone has chosen Ericsson's (NASDAQ:ERICY) Mobile Softswitch to expand its network in Fiji. Ericsson will also introduce the first 3G network to the Pacific Ocean nation with a WCDMA upgrade.

Under the five-year agreement, Ericsson will also provide managed services. Vodafone will invest USD 15 million to modernize its core network and introduce a new 3G-radio network, including mobile softswitch.
